“Real dogs don’t need tails.” That’s what Maverick and Ginger told their precious baby Sagebrush when she was born without a tail. Maverick and Ginger were the house dogs, living on a cattle ranch, high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. They were working cattle dogs on a real working horse and cattle operation. When Maverick and Ginger had their sweet baby Sage they were in awe. In awe of her sweetness and beauty. Sagebrush didn’t know she was different from the other dogs. How could she? She couldn’t see behind herself anyway. It was only when the other dogs on the ranch laughed and jeered at her that she started to figure out something was different about her. “You call yourself a Welsh Corgi? Ha, your nothing but a Corky” they laughed.

Sagebrush overcomes labeling and bullying by her peers with the help of a young woman who hasn’t let being a girl stop her from achieving her dreams. The young woman and the little dog disprove the disbelievers. They overcome fears that others can put upon you just because you look different. They find love, happiness, value, and worth in this tale set high in the Rocky Mountains on a working cattle ranch.
About the Author
Joni Franks lives in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. She has a passion for mountain beauty and animals. Joni owned a cattle ranch, raising both registered cattle and dogs. She is inspired by her beautiful Welsh corgi Sagebrush and by the trials and tribulations that women face in the harsh environment of the Rockies and in a line of work considered to be a man’s world. Joni is an active member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
