John Townsend

Gilbert John Townsend was born in 1919 in London, England. After a secondary school education he attended the Gravesend Sea School in Kent, England in the latter part of 1937.

Joining his first ship in 1938; John as he prefers to be called served right through the war years losing many of the friends and colleagues he had served with along the way. John finally gave up the Merchant Navy for a life ashore in 1949. After which he followed several other forms of employment. John retired in 1979 and now resides in the quiet town of Walton-On-Naze in Essex, England with his wife Freda.
