Mary Hilaire (Sally) Tavenner, Ph.D.

Author Biography

Dr. Mary Hilaire (Sally) Tavenner is the author of four books, including her dissertation: A Reader Response Study of Fourth-Grade African American and European American Students Employing the Transactional Theory. Previously published books include A Portrait of Helen Steiner Rice: A Lorain Version...a very short biography of Helen Steiner Rice, world-famous poet from her hometown of Lorain; Nun of This and Nun of That: Book One, Beginnings and the sequel, Nun of This and Nun of That: Book Two, Making Vows, a realistic fiction set of books depicting convent life in the 1960s: and France, 1996, a journal of Tavenner's exploits and adventures with friend, Nicholas Deliman, during their trip to France in 1996. Now, Tavenner's latest book, Peru, 2002: Memoirs of a Writer in Peru is a very personal rendition of her two-week long odyssey in a culture completely foreign to life in her hometown of Lorain, Ohio. Dr. Tavenner has published dozens of articles throughout the years and given hundreds of public speeches. After teaching for almost 30 years, she has embraced a full-time career of writing, publishing and public speaking. Hilaire (known as Sally to her family and childhood friends), is a former Franciscan sister. Tavenner, received her B.A. in education from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., her M.A. in religious studies/theology from St. Charles Seminary in Philadelphia, PA and her Ph.D. in Reading/Language Arts from the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL. She is proud of both her past and present associations with Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter...and especially the twenty year friendship she shared with Rosalynn Carter's mother, Miss Allie Smith---as well as her 35 year-long quest for women to be ordained to the priesthood in the Catholic Church! Dr. Tavenner is a much sought-after motivational and inspiring presenter who currently resides in the family homestead of three generations, working as a freelance writer in a family business she established as "Dutch Ink". Currently, Dr. Tavenner is composing a book, Memories of Mom: They Called Her Dutch, a most personal portrait of her mother...and hopes to see it published before 2005.
