About the Book

A heart warming story of love and war that makes this book a most interesting read about the Dutch people prior to the Second World War through to the end of hostilities in 1945.

The story opens with Theo a farmers son from Leeuwarden North Holland gaining a scholarship to Royal Agricultural College Cirencester England. He falls in love with an English girl then in 1939 he goes with her family to Leeuwarden Holland to meet her parents when war breaks out with German troops occupying Holland. Connie and her parents attempt to reach England for safety via Amsterdam to Hull by boat. That is when things begin to go wrong.

A love story that takes them through a period of conflict and turmoil in Holland at the time of Operation Market Garden and the allied forces failed attempt to secure the bridge at Arnhem and highlighting the bravery of the Dutch Underground Movement during  the occupation by German forces and individual efforts made by many people.

A sad time that people find themselves in during times of conflict but having the will to survive.

The bonding of lasting love gives rise to a lovely novel of love and war which could be true as the places are, only the people are fictitious.
