Henry Lea had very many drawings published in newspapers and magazines during the early decades of last century. His profusely illustrated autobiography, A Veld Farmer’s Adventures, (Frederick Muller. London, 1936) is now a collector’s item, while a significant number of his works can be found in more modern books on South African history, as well as in museums such as MuseuMAfricA. The story in this book is aimed at 4-10 year olds, but the historical aspect is of relevance to anyone wanting to know about those days, a century or more ago, for ordinary black people living on a farm in the Eastern Transvaal. The liveliness and charm of the art is of great appeal to many. Jenny Lea, a retired orchestral musician, is a granddaughter of the artist.
