Development of Vancomycin Dosage Guidelines to Achieve New Target Concentrations in Paediatric Patients

Objectives: The basic purpose of this study is to ascertain the dosage guidelines of vancomycin for paediatric patients by employing tools, pharmacokinetic modeling, and simulation. Also, its purpose is to establish dosage guidelines of vancomycin to attain new target trough concentrations between 10–20 mg/L. Methods: Review the available literature on vancomycin dosage guidelines and pharmacokinetic parameters that are relevant to paediatric patients. Create a simulated patient population (one month to eighteen years), and use it with published guidelines and pharmacokinetic parameters to test which guidelines achieve current target concentrations for vancomycin infusions. Develop new guidelines if deemed necessary to achieve target concentrations. Produce a set of dosage recommendations for the use of vancomycin in a paediatric population.

About the Author

I practiced clinical pharmacy in primary care with Dr. Mohamed D. Ibrahim (consultant in internal medicine / tutor in Zagazig University), Dr Elhendawy (specialist in dermatology and venereology), and Dr.Khatibur Rahman (specialist in paediatric). Now I am working as a clinical pharmacist in clinics.
