“The fish have gone!” cried Jeremy. “Come and look.” He was right; there was not a single fish to be seen. Jeremy stayed the night and got up early to catch the bus to school. Granny was making sandwiches for lunch when she looked out of the window. “Jeremy,” whispered Granny. “Look over at the fishpond.” Jeremy looked out of the window, and sitting on a tree branch, gazing down into the pond, was a shiny black bird. “What is that?” asked Jeremy. It’s a cormorant,” said Granny. “They eat fish. That’s why we couldn’t see any fish. The cormorant has eaten our goldfish and come back to see if there are anymore.”

About the Book
The stories I write are based loosely on events in the lives of my children and grandchildren. The first story in this book is about Jeremy, who appears in The Patchwork Pig, and describes the family’s experiences setting up a fishpond. The second story introduces our youngest grandchild, Marley, who loves to feed carrots to the family horse.
About the Author
Julia is a retired pharmacist, mother of five children, and grandmother of eight. An avid reader since the age of four, she has read stories to her children and grandchildren over many years. Her other interests include photography, bird watching, and quilting. She has arts degrees from two universities and a master of letters degree in philosophy. Her heroes are Socrates and Winston Churchill. A “Ten Pound Pom,” Julia lives in Australia with her husband, two English Springer Spaniels, and a horse. In spite of all efforts to teach her, Julia has never learned to swim, sing, dance, or draw.
