About the Author

Maurice N. Karkar Ph.D is a researcher, a scientist and an inventor who graduated from UC Berkeley and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio. He co-founded a medical company, assigned patents that were part of an IPO (Initial Public Offering) to another company, created his own businesses based on his patented products and currently receives a pension from Baxter International. Dr. Karkar was awarded several patents in the medical and commercial fields.

Author’s important accomplishments
• March 16, 1968 – BS –Electrical Engineering, Berkeley, CA
• August 13, 1974 – NIH fellowship towards Ph.D., paid for monthly allowance, tuition and fees. Fellowship for 5 years
• June 11, 1975 – MS degree in Biomedical Engineering, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio
• November 7, 1977 – Finalist in student competition paper at the AMEB Annual conference in Los Angeles, CA
• August 22, 1979 – Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio
• July 1980, established reflectance measurement using a single 5 mil optical fiber which was the basis of fluorescence technology in medical devices such as open heart blood gas measurement.
• March 1, 1981 – CMP-2 performance evaluation – stated that:” Maurice developed an in-vivo fiber-optic densitometer for use with green dye. This accomplishment was significant because other investigators and several of our consultants felt that such an instrument was not feasible with our current technology”
• June 2, 1981 – Co-founded Cardiovascular Devices, Inc.
• Patents in 1987, 1987,1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1993, 2000
• January 16, 1992 – Patent assignment to US Drug Testing
• October 5, 1993 – IPO for Drug Testing, Inc. – $7.5 million for use of patents for a device measuring oxygen saturation and hematocrit in blood as well as another device for measuring 6 drugs in saliva
• 1994 to present – developed two patents for two businesses: Lighted-address signs which was sold in 2009 and Dermacare-supplies.
