This book proposes two reforms to the present commercialization of NCAA Division I football and basketball and the exploitation of African American student-athletes. In this book, the author —presents detailed data about revenue generation in college sports, —presents compelling reasons on why student-athletes in the revenue sports of Division I football and basketball are exploited and why it happens most often to African American students, —provides a real funding model for fair revenue distribution and compensation for Division I student-athletes in revenue sports, —proposes real alternatives for elite student-athletes in all sports to achieve their professional goals and earn a degree without contributing to commercialization of college sports and exploitation of student-athletes, —explains how some African American students are complicit in their own exploitation and how to stop this practice, and —recommends ways that all student athletes can use their collective power and voice to implement changes.

About the Author

Enzley Mitchell IV, Ph.D. is an assistant professor and chair of the sport management program at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana and owner of EKM Sports and Entertainment, LLC. Enzley combines his passion for helping young people pursue their dreams of attending college, participating in intercollegiate athletics, and educating families through a College Success Program called PrepSearch. He formed PrepSearch and developed the College Success Program after working in intercollegiate athletics as a basketball coach and director of athletics for over 15 years. In addition to over 15 years’ experience in intercollegiate athletics, Mitchell has an extensive background outside of intercollegiate athletics. He has served as a certified contract advisor and player agent for the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), worked as a head professional basketball coach in Europe. His corporate experience includes positions in banking as a licensed representative with Chase and KeyBank and Assistant Vice-President for Nelnet.

As a former high school and college coach, I found this book to not only be insightful but it tells a hard hitting truth, whether we want to believe it or not. If you value young student-athletes then this book is a must read. It not only describes some of the major issues faced by student-athletes at the Division One level, it also provides unique, thought provoking solutions.

Wow! What a fantastic book to read if you are a disgusted Division I college basketball and football fan. The author provides factual data and easy-reading details about what is going on with the money grab in major college sports and its negative affect on student-athletes that are just used to pull in revenue for a year or so. The fact that many do not make it big in professional sports yet they cannot fall back on a college degree because the matriculation of these student-athletes isn't a concern of the university or the NCAA is clearly making a mockery of the word "student-athlete." The NCAA, the Power Five conferences, and the individual schools are unjustly enriched by the talent of these student-athletes, but no "real" action is taken to ensure these student-athletes can earn a degree. Excellent read. Highlight recommended!

Power Play is a book I thoroughly enjoyed and gained knowledge as I went through the book. It drove in depth on issues we have debated in intercollegiate athletics for many years but also brought new ideas to the table. It made me think deeper on issues that I have talked about and debated but never have gone deeper in my thought process. Mitchell made me do this with how he wrote the book. Lastly, the book contains some great data but also combines that with some rational solutions. Anybody who is interested in this topic needs to read, Power Play. Rob Miller

This book is full of data and can serve as an excellent resource to educator, administrator, student athelete, family and friends of student athelets as well as the local barbershop conversationalist. The bottom line is that, Mitchell did his homework on this one!!! It gives solid suggestions to realize and eventually maximize the "collective power" of the African American Student-Athlete. Mitchell supplies an in-depth analysis of viable solutions for the African American Student Athelete that is often glossed over or rarely explored.

Riveting and shocking! Taking college athletics to the next level. Dr. Mitchell unveils how modern day exploitation of African American college athletes in colleges is occurring year after year. Ben Shapiro, YouTube blogger, speaks of this same topic. This book should be read by all parents with students atheletes. Dr Mitchell should be commended for his stand on the rights of Empowerment of the African American Student Athelete. Great book!

Dr. Mitchell has presented a thought-provoking argument on a controversial and often contentious topic within intercollegiate athletics and one in which I have had numerous conversations and debates on throughout my years in intercollegiate athletics. Mitchell dives into the topic of the exploitation of the African-American student-athletes in the revenue sports of the Power 5 Conferences as it pertains to Division 1 football, and men's and women's basketball through data, interviews and personal experiences. Mitchell also proposes real alternatives through a funding model entitled Net Athletics Revenue Payment which has merit as a viable solution to the problem. He also recommends ways that all student-athletics can use their voice and collective power to implement real change.
