Having listened to many stories from Doug Jones and others, I was inspired to collect stories from present and former associates of Broken Hill Repertory Society for inclusion in a book we could all enjoy. Wherever people spend a lot of time together achieving, there are always interesting and funny stories and memories. So while this book covers the history of the Broken Hill Repertory Society, it includes many funny anecdotes and tributes that will be of interest to members past and present. Victor Bindley was the driving force behind the early productions. He was producer and director and guided and taught the crew everything from lighting, sound, props, costume. He had so much experience of theatre. Mr Bindley's position as Picture Theatre manager meant he had to be in attendance at every showing. The evening movie ended at approximately 11pm, and it was after that time that the Rep rehearsals would commence at the Police Boys Club. All of the cast and technicians were working or were business people, so it was not possible to hold rehearsals in the day time. Actors and crew were already rehearsing and awaiting Mr Bindley's arrival by car. Mr Bindley did not own a car, nor did he drive, so had to rely on a crew member to pick him up and also drive him home. Many a night a small part player had to be roused from sleep to take the cue. In fact, on one occasion a cast member found a quiet corner backstage after his last cue, went to sleep, and when it was lock up time it was assumed he had gone home. But no, he was locked in the Police Boys Club. The staff of PBC woke him from his sleep at about 8am next morning. He slept well.
