About the Book

The Dismal River Massacre is a continuation of the novel, Barbed Wire. The Ritt Perry Family; father, mother and three sons, are all United States Marshals in Thedford, Nebraska. Two of the sons are killed and the pursuit of the killer down into Texas brings new adventures for the three remaining Marshals in the middle eighteen hundreds. Marshal Ritt Perry decides their number should always be five, and so their number was and they stood tall. The times were changing as related to the establishment of law and order, for Federal and State enforcement were giving way to the need for larger local police forces. The lust for land brought about the cattle baron because the cattle industry was exploding. The need for quality cattle and ample supply were the driving forces. The once open ranges were being closed because of barbed wire and this brought with it monumental confrontations over control of the land and many dead. The Dismal River Massacre was the result of all these evolving pressures between man and his environment.
