About the Book

This book was written to help Veterans make their way through the maze of VA regulations, written and unwritten, that prevents them from attaining service connection. The VA, like any governmental entity, is difficult to work with. They do everything on paper and have not advanced to electronic files yet. Only 12-15 percent of VA claims are approved due to red tape and a misunderstanding of what is required. VA prefers you use Veterans Service Organizations to file your claims. I feel Veterans are not very well served by this method and advocate a do it yourself approach. This works well until you get to the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims(CAVC) at that point, you would be best served by having a good attorney and nothing less.

About the Author

I’m 61 years old and a Veteran of the Vietnam War. I served two years on the Indochinese peninsula in Thailand, Laos and the Republic of Vietnam in the Air Force from 1970-1972. I have diseases from Agent Orange as well as Hepatitis C virus from a transfusion there. In addition, I have degenerative Disc Disease from a fall and an airplane crash. I filed my first claim with VA in 1989 and lost. I finally won in 2008 and am now cleaning up their mess from claims never completed in 1994. I live in Washington State. I use a pseudonym because my claims are still being appealed to the VA. The Veterans Administration has shown that they can be very vindictive towards those who criticize them. I have no desire to cross swords with them.

The author/website moderator of AskNod.org, has since achieved additional credentials after the book‘s release, adding to his formidable resume, the impressive distinctions of being recognized both as a VA-certified, independent Claims Agent with NOVA accreditation, ...now authorized to represent Veterans in the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. While there are multiple Veteran Benefits Advocacy websites, the author’s has been my immediate ‘Go-to’, for several years. I deliberately include this point, as it aptly ties-in with the value of his counsel, captured in both platforms of website and book, (of which I have Kindle and paperback versions). As previously mentioned, there are some long standing, legitimately solid VBA advocacy sites and DIY forums out there, that provide creditable guidance to the Vet community. The distinguishing characteristic that consistently draws me back, is the genuinely ‘Vet-centric’ format, that demonstrates the veracity of his ‘prime directive’ or, mission statement: “Win or Die” (that others may win). That core principle, is backed up by his sincere desire to educate the reader, without ulterior socio-political motives (urging membership to a specific Veterans Organization), monetary shake-down ploys, invasive user registration or forum contributor enrollment, requiring one to surrender their personal information, or credit card. Unlike some host/moderators, the author wisely refrains from polarizing political commentary, that needlessly offends the opposition party, inhibiting mutual camaraderie and prohibits productive discussion. That’s not intended to suggest the author exhibits a stiff, joyless “Get offa my lawn!” demeanor. Quite the opposite in fact. I came for the adjudicatory tutelage, ...but stayed for the witty, facetious and irreverent social commentary! However, if a person approves of revisionist history and salutes virtue signaling SJW sentiment; ”This isn’t the droid you’re looking for!” Again, both the book and website, feature easily accessible research tools, while providing invaluable wisdom and first-hand insights, drawn from fascinating (and often infuriating!) redacted excerpts of play-by-play coverage of his ‘adjudicatory combat’ waged against the VA, on behalf of a Veteran or their widow ...all the while expressing himself through an entertaining narrative style, that is at once, sophisticated, sarcastic and righteously indignant! (dictionary and thesaurus, suggested) I furthermore, am thankful for the conspicuous absence of monetization tactics: No jiggling GIFS, pervasive pop-ups pleading/shaming you for money, or enticing multimedia instruction, teasing you with intriguing preliminary content, (that abruptly halts) ...directing you to locked pay-wall, accessible only as a paid subscriber. Finally, I can speak both personally and professionally, about his unselfish service toward supporters of the Veteran community from a recent, ironic anecdote. The author’s oft-expressed sentiment of distrust and disregard toward the relative usefulness of a ‘typical’ VSO (in providing competent VA Benefits Advocacy), is roughly equivalent to the putrified dregs found at the proverbial ‘bottom of the barrel’. Considering his unflattering assessment of the ‘typical’ VSO (in their natural habitat), after I reached out to the author in a recent email ...respectfully requesting his valued opinion concerning one of the most complicated endeavors of advocacy a VSO can attempt, I was ecstatic to discover his prompt, lengthy and detailed response, (IAW with the legal intricacies inherent). Not only did I receive the well-reasoned opinion that only experience at this level, can provide ...he graciously included authoritative research links, pertinent regulatory references and then offered me a ‘treasure trove’ of CAVC quick reference citations of case law precedent opinions, indispensable when undertaking formidable legal arguments that involve retrospective implications (with likewise, retroactive monetary award judgments). Now, since this man was willing to invest THAT kind of personal time and energy to ADVISE and EQUIP both a NON-client, as well as a regrettable specimen from his LEAST-LOVED category of Veteran Benefit Advocates, ...Wow! I am totally convinced, that ‘paying’ customers whom contract with him for fee-based legal representation, receive MUCH more than their money’s worth!
