Peace Corps Volunteer Writes His Own Success

Jack Shakely

Jack Shakely is no stranger to service. He has been president of the California Community Foundation in Los Angeles, a US Army officer, and a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica. And like any great writer, he drew from these experiences to produce great writing.

His time with the Peace Corps inspired him to write the award-winning book, Che Guevara’s Marijuana & Baseball Savings & Loan: A Novel of the Early Days of the Peace Corps.

With that, Jack took home the best fiction award in the 2014 Oklahoma Book Awards, which recognizes books by Oklahomans or about Oklahoma; and bagged the bronze award in the Midwest regional fiction category of the 2014 Independent Publisher Book Awards, which recognizes the best works in the self-publishing industry.

Jack attributes his success to hard work. He believes that writers should prepare to do the “heavy lifting” to show one’s work to the world even if it meant risking shame. He says that this ability to carry on even after publication is what sets self-published authors apart from traditional ones.

This month, Xlibris sits down with Jack to talk about his book, his writing inspiration, and his advice for both aspiring and veteran authors.
