Since the very first wars, animals have played an important part in the armies of the world. Ancient soldiers used elephants to carry troops and crush their enemies, soldiers on foot were no match for those on horseback, mules and oxen pulled supply wagons and heavy weapons, pigeons delivered urgent messages to troops separated on the battlefield, and dogs guarded outposts, carried medical supplies and located wounded soldiers. When World War I, or the “Great War” broke out on the European continent in 1914, animals were once again called upon to perform duties that would put their lives in great danger. This is the story of one such animal, a dog named Stubby, who, like so many other brave animals of the time, answered their nation’s call to duty.
