When Essie Feebler tells her estranged husband, Bernie, to drop dead, she isn’t speaking literally. It’s just like Bernie to actually drop dead, and to pick the worst time and location to do it – the Coffee Cave, after drinking the double latte with six pumps of almond, which Essie herself prepared for him. In the course of their investigation, Detectives Valdez and Murray discover that Bernie isn’t the only corpse connected to Essie. They go looking for her with a warrant.

It’s been eight years since Jan Gallagher traded the excitement of San Diego for the charm of Woodland, California. The gracious Victorian architecture, tree shaded streets, Carnegie library, antique rose gardens and friendly people make living in Woodland seem like stepping back in time. “The quiet suits me. I find it conducive to creativity,” says Gallagher. She enjoys a balance of time with family and friends and time alone. Her true love is poetry, which she calls “drawing pictures and ideas with words.”
