About the Author

About the Authors Sasha Plyuschaev was born in Ukraine in 1973, in Donetsk, a city in the centre of Donetsk Oblast. When she finished school, she decided to become a hairdresser. “As a profession, hairdressing is about giving your undivided attention to your client and making sure they leave the salon in a happy mood. Changing a client’s look and appearance is a risk,” she shares. It was her profession that led her to meet her husband. She arrived in Sydney with her family in August 1994. A few hard years later of learning English and working in different Sydney hair salons, Plyuschaev was able to realise her dream and open her own hair salon Sasha’s Hair in the heart of Sydney’s Bondi Road, in the vibrant and multicultural suburb of Bondi, world famous for its beach. This book is a collection of stories about her clients, who shared their lives with her each time they were in her hairdresser’s chair. Irina Markovsky got to know Sasha many years ago. Her grandfather met Sasha first, found her charming and refused to go to any other hair salon apart from hers. Sasha became the family hairdresser. Growing up, Markovsky loved having stories read to her. When it came time to choose a career, she wanted to write stories to entertain people, as a way of giving back to the universe for her discovery of cinema, theatre and literature. These are her treasured means of escape. Helping Sasha co-write A Brush with Life was a natural progression of their friendship. She was inspired by Sasha’s enthusiasm for her work and her compassion for her clients.
