About the Book
Authenticities is the third volume (preceded by THE PROMISE AND THE SNAKE and A STAIRCASE VIEW: FAITH IN AMERICA) of a series of essays in culture criticism, centered on the modern United States. The foundations of our civilization are probed in the crisis-spirit of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s treaties on origins, Stephanie Mallarmé’s Divigations, and Albert Camus’s The Rebel.
About the Author
ROBERT GREER COHN is best known for his lifetime work on Mallarmé; Michel Deguy referred to him as the “posthumous Mallarmé”. Julia Kristeva, in an article subtitled “Hommage a R.G. Cohn,” Giuseppe Ungaretti, Richard Wilbur, Philippe Sollers… His The Poetry of Rimband was deemed by Henri Peyre to be “perhaps the best study [of the poet] in any language”. He was the Founding Editor of Yale French Studies and the author of sixteen books, a two-time Guggenheim fellow; he is professor emeritus of French at Stanford University.
