# ABOUT THE AUTHOR Robert Hill was born and raised in Iowa. After graduating from Hi School he traveled to California where he found employment with the Consolidated Aircraft Co., San Diego. He joined the U.S. Air Corps in 1942 and completed 35 combat missions over Nazi Germany. After leaving the Air Corps in 1945 he attended the University of Colorado, Greeley, where he met and married his wife Elaine. Together they raised five children, ran a business in Wichita, Kansas for twenty-two years and later retired in 1984. Together they moved to Western North Carolina and they presently reside in Waynesville. In 2002 Bob organized and directed the Haywood Community Band. In February 2005, because of colon cancer, he turned the directorship over to his friend, a retired music professor from Western North Carolina.
