About the Book

About the Author

On 9 November 1930, Dr. Charles Reagan, my grandfather, brought me into this world in Beeville, Texas. When I was two years old, Dad led a saddled kid pony into the yard, put me on him, and rode off into the pasture. When I was nine years old, he brought half broke horses to the house for my brother and me to ride. When I was twelve, he put me on my first horse to break and train and put my 15 year old brother and me at a camp 6 miles W of the house to ride pasture and take care of whatever needed attention. When I was 16, I got a license so I could drive a truck for the ranch. The summers I was 18 and 19, I ran a horse breaking camp where I cooked the food on a cooking fireplace and the boys kept the kitchen clean. I graduated from college and spent two years in the army. I spent most of my time in the brush country until in 1962 when I realized I couldn’t do right by my family on a cowboy’s salary. I quit and went to town to make a living. I got a Master’s Degree and spent 28 years in Education.

Biography – Jean G. Schnitz

I met Pat Reagan in 1946 and am acquainted with his family in Raymondville, Beeville, George West, San Saba and elsewhere – all in Texas. I knew he was a good storyteller! As President of the Texas Folklore Society in 2006-2007, it was my goal to preserve the history and folklore of South Texas. This book got started with that goal in mind, but has been good entertainment for Pat and me and for our families.
