About the Author

John Haney was born in Yuma, Arizona. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and received a Purple Heart for wounds received during combat in Korea. After serving six years in the corps, he was honorably discharged. He returned to Arizona and attended the state university, where he majored in government, history and journalism. After graduating, he worked as an editor, reporter and bureau chief for several Arizona publications. He joined the New York Times in 1967 and spent 25 years at the Times News Service. He retired in 1992. John and his wife Anne, live in Grand Gorge in New York’s Catskill Mountains.
