About the Book

This compelling memoir speaks directly to today’s political activists. By interweaving struggles against discrimination, racism and war, and against the world of patriarchy, corporate power, and US imperialism with her own background of emotionally abusive experiences, Mary Wentworth shows readers that the personal cannnot be separated from the political. Whether inside a prison in New Hampshire or inside a political campaign, Wentworth describes the action in detail. With its incisive analysis, Discovering America: A Political Journey is an enduring record of the past and a must read for those who want to understand the crises of the present.

About the Author

A Maine native and Smith College graduate, Mary Wentworth did not become politically active until after she married and had six daughters. She became involved in confronting racism and sexism in Philadelphia more than a decade after leaving her code-breaker's job at a top-secret agency during the McCarthy witch hunts. Her activism continued after a divorce and relocation to Amherst, Massachusetts. Widely traveled, she writes newspaper articles and columns and provides radio and TV commentary on a range of issues. Her compelling memoir features an innovative “Looking Back” section in which she analyzes her experiences from a current perspective. 99
