About the Book
Born androgynous, William Shakespeare must come to understand himself in a conservative, male dominated, Elizabethan world. With his dying breath, he journeys into his past, revealing scandalous secrets and saintly deeds. As a penitent, he questions his life, recalling conflicts, tragedies, and victories.
Rooted in historical facts, "Retelling" offers a humanity to the one called Shakespeare. It recalls how sexuality shaped and complicated the poet’s sense of self and motivates his introspective life. With a deeply spiritual fervor, "Retelling" privileges the reader to discover Shakespeare’s thoughts. It resurrects a life full of temerity, boldness, and passion.
