About the Book

Donnavan “Kilo” Davis is a thug from the South Side projects in Calhoun. Kilo has the ability to one day play in the NBA. It seems impossible for Kilo to discontinue his thug lifestyle, which prevents college coaches from recruiting him. For a moment it seems hopeless for Kilo until he robs a corner store and realizes that his coach/Algebra teacher is one of his hostages. Coach Bell sees intelligence deep inside the troubled teen and decides to discipline Kilo even if beating up a student is against the law. Coach Bell doesn’t snitch to the police, but blackmails Kilo into attending college. Kilo decides to attend college hoping to remove his family from the projects. Coach Bell talks to an old friend who gives Kilo the opportunity to play basketball. Later on Kilo is thrown off the team after he and four friends are caught with stolen guns and marijuana. Somehow Kilo graduates and gets an assistant coaching job. Damon, Kilo’s friend, feels that college has made Kilo soft and forget were he came from. Damon apologizes right before he dies after Coach Kilo shoots the two men that just killed Damon, Pimp, Tymer, and Bock in a drive-by shooting. After witnessing the death of four friends at once, Kilo becomes dedicated to his coaching job and helps African Americans students prepare for a successful life.
