About the Book
Summary Jacob, his wife Katerina, and their beautiful little daughter Kati try to escape, but they are caught and taken to the prison camp of Colonel Wilhelm Bernhardt. The tale of Nazi prison camp inmates begins with the failed attempt of this wealthy, Christian family of Jewish ancestry to leave Germany. The trail leads through the war and its aftermath with treachery, sexual assault, adultery, and attempted murder countered by the warmth of family and friends, faith, and fidelity. High society, romance, gaiety, and fashion are interwoven with ambition, greed, and deceit in New York and Argentina.
About the Author
Biography A bon vivant, infused with joie de vivre and grounded in her Irish Catholic faith, the author once struggled with alcoholism, achieving sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous. She lives outside of Philadelphia, her birthplace, at the start of the Great Depression, where her family of six had returned from a comfortable life in Santiago, Chile. An aspiring vocalist, she performed in local opera, eventually moving to New York to try musical theatre and modeling. She was inspired by an older brother Walter, who was an unpublished writer and by her vocally gifted mother.
