About the Book
You know Judy Berry, don’t you? You ought to—she’s the best-selling African-American poet of the 21st century, winning the hearts of millions of women—and a few sensitive men—with her romantic and inspiring poetry. With her jive-talking radio star husband Martial, their teenager Zora and their second-grader Rodney, they complete a family that lives like the Huxtables and the Banks from Bel-Air—the so-called ‘good life.’ Yet under all the fame and fortune, Judy secretly suffers from the heat of the abortion she had in her teen years. It seems like everything constantly reminds her of the old deed—like local demonstration rallies and Martial’s radio show. Occasionally she also has nightmares about it, and in each nightmare, there is a furious firebird that blows its flames and caws in sheer rage, leaving her too puzzled and petrified to sleep at night. Someone else knows her secret very well, though—the Ashman, the maniacal leader of a deadly, anti-abortion extremist organization, who has targeted the renowned poet and placed her at the very top of his extensive agenda. Strangely he appears in Judy’s dreams that become living horrors. Old emotions—primarily wrath—return like hell-spawned revenants as things around her begin to burn—alive and inanimate alike. And as the never-ending fire between pro-choice activists and pro-life radicals flares up high, Judy has no choice but to take a stand against the Ashman’s blaze of terror and prevent her world from being reduced to nothing but ashes.
