About the Author

Dr. Bastani was born in Abadan, Iran in 1951. He earned his MD degree in 1977 and specialty in internal medicine in 1980 from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (formerly Pahlavi University). After the Islamic Revolution of Iran, he became director of the Health Department in the city of Jahrom for two years, and then he served in the city of Bandar Abbas for one year. He left Iran in 1984, since which time he has lived in the United States. He completed two years of fellowship in nephrology at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, two years of senior residency and chief residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Samaritan Hospital (affiliated with the University of Wisconsin) in Milwaukee, and three years of research fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine, Saint Louis, Missouri. He joined the faculty of Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1991 and has been at the rank of professor of Internal Medicine and Nephrology since 2000. Dr. Bastani is the medical director of kidney transplantation in Saint Louis University. Dr. Bastani is also a board member of the Iranian American Cultural Society of the Midwest, the Shia Islamic Educational Center, and vice president of the Islamic Medical Association of North America—Saint Louis Chapter. He served as president of the Faculty Assembly of Saint Louis University School of Medicine and president of the American Association of University Professors—Saint Louis Chapter, from 2005 to 2008.
