About the Author
Little by little without notice they had combined both skills into one of social work and law enforcement. This newfound knowledge would serve them well when they eventually parted, with Tommy becoming a emergency medical technician and Nelson continuing his assignment with the homeless outreach unit, using his inherited skills while escorting the new, very young outreach workers around the subways to meet with their clients. He was walking in Tommy’s' shoes, having been accepted as a good replacement by the same clients that Tommy worked with before. Tommy was now busy racing around midtown Manhattan in an ambulance, lights and sirens, responding to emergencies along with police and fire fighters. He now walked in Nelsons' shoes. Tommy McInnis and Nelson Velez remain friends. Nelson retired from the police department on March 31st 2005 and Tommy continues to work as an EMT in Manhattan. They both still live in and work New York City.
