"About one out of every forty-five adults in the United States suffers from a disease called “bipolar disorder,” or manic depression. It manifests itself in mania, a time of high energy, followed by depression, distress, and sometimes a risk of suicide--from one polar to the other. Imagine living with this disease in a small town, where everybody knows your name and feeling as if you are the only person in the world who is “different.” This is Janet’s story, a story of love and life, written when medications finally began taking hold and she could keep an account of her days. She describes herself as a green apple in a basket full of red apples. This book is meant to give hope to those who have been diagnosed as “bipolar” as well as to those who try to love and care for such a one, despite the feelings of fear, shame, and despair."
