About the Book

From Lotte’s early years in pre-Nazi Germany to emigrations to Holland, then America, this memoir describes Lotte’s life. The book reflects her early experiences in Hitler’s shadow and recounts her trials and joys as she learned new languages and skill sets, helped to support her parents, became a citizen, obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and raised a family. Hers is a tale of surmounting adversity and the building of a satisfying, productive life.

About the Author

Lotte, was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, on the French border, in 1923. Her family saw the rise of Hitler, lost their business to the Nazis, and, as Dutch nationals, emigrated to Holland. As Hitler moved westward, the family emigrated again to New York. There, Lotte learned English and finished high school. She developed new skills with the family’s purchase of a New Jersey poultry farm. Subsequently, she began college at Rutgers University and married Morris, a veterinarian. When Morris was transferred to California by the Army, Lotte continued college at Stanford. At the close of WWII, Morris joined his brother’s practice, and Lotte was able to finish college at Brown and raise a family. Currently, she and Morris live in Florida, enjoying retirement and visits from children and grand children.
