About the Book

In the fall of 2012, I took some kids on a fieldtrip to Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City. I had taken a trail through a natural portion of the gardens and sat down on a bench to contemplate the beauty surrounding me. Then I spotted a pole, just a little ways off, with a small platform on top, obviously meant for a nest to be built. This story just came into my mind.

About the Author

I am a school bus driver. In the fall of 2012, I took some kids on a fieldtrip to Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City. I had taken a trail through a natural portion of the gardens and sat down on a bench to contemplate the beauty surrounding me.Then I spotted a pole, just a little ways off, with a small platform on top, obviously meant for a nest to be built. This story just came into my mind. I had never written anything much before. In fact, all the way from grade school through college, writing was my toughest subject. So, I tried to just dismiss the story and get it out of my mind but I couldn’t. Then, over spring break of 2013, I decided that the only way to get it out of my mind was to write it. I owe a great deal of thanks to my sister Marilyn Saunders Cheney for her encouragement and contributions. Grandma’s Grove is a beautiful spot on the Weber River often visited by all kinds of birds of prey. Once one of my nephews was fishing and had spotted a big trout. Just when he got the perfect cast and thought the trout would bite, an osprey dove down and snatched that trout away. I think the spectacular sight he got made up for not getting the fish.
