About the Book

Toby, From the Shelter is based on our family’s true story of the loss of a long-time family pet and the adoption of another from a local shelter (ACS) in San Antonio, Texas. This story helps children understand that it is ok to find joy again after grieving the loss of a pet, and that shelter animals can become delightful additions to families.

About the Author

Crystal Pickard has been a public school teacher for 23 years, and enjoys using children’s literature regularly with her class to convey valuable life lessons that students will remember. You can read how Toby became part of her family. She wants people to have success with dog adoption, and hopes that this story will inspire families to adopt homeless animals in her community and the throughout the United States.
