About the Book

A few years ago, my wife Mary and I found ourselves exploring a vast and remote archaeological area of Northern New Mexico called Chaco Canyon. We were fortunate enough to stumble upon a tour, guided by a National Park archaeologist who, in his midsixties, spent his entire PhD career studying ruins in and around Chaco. He told us, “We know there were people living here and when they lived here. We know there were buildings here.” He gestured around at the obvious. “Everything else is just speculation.” He paused to allow time for this naked and refreshing honesty to sink in. Then he said, “Archaeology is informed speculation—but it is speculation nonetheless.”

About the Author

For an author writing historical fiction (as well as a big kid obsessed with history), this revelation about speculation is a dream come true—and a license that allows imagination to grin from here to eternity. Living for years in fabled Sedona, Arizona, in the heart of Red Rock country, hiking and handling ancient antiquities fueled passion for the ancient ones of the Southwest. Quantum physics and speculations about simultaneous multiple universes—coupled with reports from artists, scientists, and inventors throughout time of inspirations provided in dreams—gave all the plot twists one could ask. Today, my wife, daughter Sage, and I live in the mountains of Western Maine in the midst of immense natural beauty surrounded by history both similar to and vastly different from that of the desert Southwest. New chapters are begun.
