About the Book
Buttermilk Cornbread and Turnip Greens is a collection of poems and short stories chronicling the life experiences of a "nonconformist" daughter, and her traditional, Southern-bred mother. When the mother succumbs to cancer, the daughter discovers the things her mother saved tell a unique story of their own.
About the Author
A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Sheila has over twenty years of experience in the field of Education. Her engaging, standards-based, interactive, presentations make her a highly popular presenter in all settings from classroom engagements, to school assemblies, and corporate luncheons. Sheila is a master at coordinating historically accurate, educational experiences that delight students of all ages. In 1998, Sheila was selected as the Air Force Association National Teacher of the Year (Christa McAuliffe Award), becoming the first African-American to win the prestigious title. During that year, she also received the Mississippi Air Force Association Teacher of the Year Award, the Mississippi Board of Education’s Excellence in Education Award, and the Southeastern Region Air Force Association Teacher of the Year Award. Her innovative teaching methods have been featured in the Air Force news, Early Childhood Educator, and Air Force Association magazines. She was also instrumental in creating the Alva Temple Chapter (Mississippi) of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., and is a recipient of the National Council of Negro Women’s Southern Excellence in Teaching Award, and earned National Board Certification in the area of Early Adolescence/Social Studies-History. After earning a M.A. in Multidisciplinary Studies at Loras College, she has served as Director of Intercultural Programs, Consultant, and Training Specialist.
