About the Book

This book is a fictional narrative of nonfictional stories that my mother would tell us every Sunday morning as we helped her prepare breakfast. First, we would wake up on Sunday mornings to Mommy’s beautiful voice joyously singing her favorite spiritual songs. Then, as she began to cook breakfast, we were her audience as she told us stories about her childhood and growing up with her siblings, parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and stories of her ancestors. Every Sunday, we would hear a new story although we heard some of the stories numerous times as we grew up. Mommy felt passionate about her family’s history and was adamant that each one of her children knew our history. My family’s history and the stories about Mommy’s youth and our ancestors still resonate clearly inside of my mind to this day. The stories have been passed down to my children. and I hope they also will continue this tradition of telling our family’s history.

About the Author

The author, Dr. Stephanie Massey, was born in San Angelo, Texas, and now resides in Illinois. She was an army brat, traveling to different states with her mother so that they could stay close to Daddy, who was serving in the United States Army. When Dr. Massey was three years old, she and her two young sisters traveled to Frankfurt, Germany, to join her daddy. However, they lived with a German family until there was adequate space to accommodate them on the army base. The family lived in Germany for over two years, and instead of returning to Texas, they decided to move from Germany to Chicago, Illinois. Her dad wanted to follow his mother to Chicago, Illinois. Her parents quickly sold their home in Texas. Dr. Massey grew up in Chicago, Illinois, with her parents and four siblings. Her dad and mom never returned to Texas to live, but as a child, Dr. Massey remembers traveling with her family to Texas every summer to visit relatives still living in Texas. Although the characters are real, some of the events in this story are fictional, even though the stories are representative of childhood experiences. Dr. Massey loves reading and writing books. She holds a doctorate degree in education.
