About the Book

STEPS UNTO HEAVEN MEDITATIONS AND PRAYERS ON THE PSALMS was Rev. Dr. William Garden Blaikie’s last work before he passed away at the age of 79. It is a devotional work to help strengthen the faith of those who read it. Just like the Psalmists of the past, through the beautiful prayers he pens after unlocking the meaning of every Psalm, he utters his words of praise. Let me share with you his last prayer with Psalm 150 as his inspiration: Forgive, holy and ever blessed One, our grievous and manifold failure to praise You with our whole heart and give to You the glory due to Your name. Shine on us, O God, that we may behold Your glory, and beholding it may praise and bless Your infinite perfection. And so impress us with what You are and what You have done for us, especially in Jesus Christ, that our warmest and most ardent feeling will be that of gratitude for Your infinite mercy, that we may ever ask: “What shall we render to the Lord for all His benefits toward us?” and that our lives may be one great sacrifice of praise for Jesus Christ and the numberless blessings of Your grace. Amen.

About the Author

The Rev. Dr. William Garden Blaikie began as a parish minister, in a small rural village in central Scotland. As Free Church Minister he accepted the call to Pilrig, Scotland outside of Edinburgh and built it into a strong vibrant Congregation. After 24 fruitful years there, he was called to be the Professor of Apologetics and Practical Theology at New College, Edinburgh. In the decades that followed he was known in both Europe and North America as a wonderful teacher to future pastors, both in the classroom and in his written works. Dr Blaikie published numerous books including Commentaries on First and Second Samuel, and Joshua in the Expositors Bible. When the famous Missionary David Livingstone passed away his family choose him to write his biography. This is just a sampling of this prolific writer. The Free Church of Scotland elected him to be Moderator of the General Assembly. And the worldwide branches of the Presbyterian Church choose him to convene and Moderate the Presbyterian Alliance. This was one of first great ecumenic movements in Church history. Finally, he was a generous Christian man who was an ardent philanthropist. Whether it was funds to help the oppressed Waldensian Church in Italy, or to provide the students at New College a dining hall, he was always there to spearhead the effort.
