About the Author
The picture is the author as teenager. Born and raised on Long Island’s (NY) North Shore where the elite raced their horses, played polo, showed their horses and fox hunted. There were numerous opportunities for employment as stable help and sometimes exercise rider, which was a good thing for a young lad with no money. In 1978 the author was manager of a prestigious thoroughbred breeding farm when a mysterious equine venereal disease closed the industry down. There was much finger pointing amid the lamentations over lost fortunes and a number of bureaucrats on both sides of the ocean were seeking new forms of employment. When the dust settled they had decided on a name for the new disease, Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM), found out how to control it and made room for some new faces at the illustrious auctions. Many of the people effected by the disease were not at risk of losing fortunes, only jobs. This story is about them, the horse people.
