About the Book

thoughts flit across the screen like birds...clouds of smoke...machine gun lingustic upheavals and sedate dreamscapes of classical music and grungy urban beats.  robert and ann see light, grey iron, poetry, sin, and bodies.  lovers, parents, friends.  death and going on.

I see this book as somewhat autobiographical but primarily as an attempt to be experimental, to push the envelope where the novel is concerned, combining elements of the journal, the essay, interior monologue, multiple points of view and non-linear narrative. I was influenced by the cut up work of William Burroughs but also the sensibilities of Milan Kundera, Paul Bowles, Kafka, Simone de Beauvoir, Natalie Sarraute, Beckett, etc. In many ways the book explores the issues of violence, evil, fear, and creativity but with a realistic view of a world that offers hope and joy and beauty as well as pain.
