About the Book
Don’t plan on putting the book aside. It is a real page-turner.
Jenina Grahame is a young Yankee woman married to an older Southern Gentleman living in Florida during the Civil War. Jenina doesn’t discover that her husband is a smuggler until after he is captured and kills himself in shame. The people from the town are sure that he has hidden a great treasure in his home. Before they can come to take her and destroy her home, she attempts to get back up north. Lost, she is captured by some renegades who are also trying to reach her husband for their leader’s share of the hidden treasure. Unable to find the “old woman wife” of the smuggler, they feel they can substitute this young woman to mate with their leader, a consolation. The leader, Andre, has been trying to get a woman with a female child to be the reincarnation of Marie Laveau, his great grandmother. His voodoo cultists are protected by the Seminoles in the deep Everglades. In retaliation for the whites making slaves out of his people and in need of sacrifices, they have resorted to piracy. Jenina’s husband had worked with them changing the gold and goods to “easy to carry” gemstones. Andre is unaware that Jenina knows where the gems are hidden or that she is the “wife”.
Not only does she feel that she must escape, but there are other prisoners who have their own reasons to escape. However, some of the prisoners are not to be trusted. Who to trust? There is Michelle, one of the women who failed to give Andre a daughter. A handsome sea captain is capable of helping. A very young girl is on the verge of being unable to help at all. An older woman of the camp is determined Jenina should die. One person knows about the hidden gems. The voodoo ceremonies and sacrifices are terrifying. There is a person who knows Jenina’s identity and about the hidden treasure.
To add insult to injury, the weather is either for or strongly against them.
It is escape or die in a most horrible way, but there is no choice.
