About the Book

THE STORY

Set mainly in New England, with visits to Pennsylvania and Colorado, A Family Heirloom opens with a paradox:

In 1984 three-year-old Shawna Hutchinson died in house fire.
Fifteen years later she begins her freshman year in college.

It is this paradox that turns Andrew Lathrop’s life upside down. Content for ten years as a truck driver, suddenly several forces work against his tranquility. In addition to Shawna’s quagmire, he gets involved with Rita, a woman he grossly misunderstands and underestimates as his failed marriage starts haunting him again. And when Shawna’s parents undermine Andrew’s benevolence, it puts his and Shawna’s life in jeopardy. But Andrew’s motives are not entirely altruistic. Deep down he wonders if solving Shawna’s plight just might help him exorcise his own inner demons.

MAIN CHARACTERS

Andrew Lathrop A Yale graduate, at age 37 he is living one day at a time and supporting himself by delivering beer. A notorious underachiever, one brief encounter finally lifts him out of a decade-long lethargy . . . and into danger.

Shawna Hutchinson Eschewing her mother’s neurotic smothering and her father’s indifference, this 18-year-old woman uses her wherewithal to assert her independence. But is she really prepared to be on her own?

Rita Mazzamurro It has taken Rita all of her 27 years to realize that using her sexuality has provided her with many more boyfriends than it has husbands (none). When her fiancé goes AWOL, she turns to Andrew for solace.

Glenn Hutchinson Madly in love with the almighty dollar, Mr. Hutchinson has little time and love left for his daughter Shawna. He still has an old score to settle with Andrew, and he views his adversary with disdain.

Pam Hutchinson Vacillating between warmth and insolence, Mrs. Hutchinson can’t let go of her daughter, with fear being a crucial element.

Carla Blair For an all-expenses-paid trip to Colorado, this 19-year-old woman willingly engages in an unusual conspiracy with her Uncle Andrew . . . for Shawna’s benefit or at Shawna’s expense?
