About the Book
The Last of the Badmen follows the life of Texas Ranger Samuel Duncan over the course of his almost forty year career. From the early frontier, though the turbulent years of the Civil War and post-war Reconstruction, to the height of the Cattle Drive days, Sam struggles to keep the peace and enforce the law the best way he can. Though never eager to start trouble, he never backs down from what he believes is right…no matter what it costs him.
Sam’s story begins in 1858 when he becomes a Ranger at the age of eighteen. Hired as little more than an extra target, Sam quickly proves himself to be not only an excellent lawman, but a dangerous fighting man as well. Later, during the vicious and terrible combat of the Civil War, Duncan is thrust into command of a rough band of guerilla fighters.
After the War, Sam returns to the Badge when he is hired as the City Marshal of Claremont, Texas. Just when he thought that the War was finally finished, Federal Soldiers ride into town to enforce the rules of Reconstruction. Tensions rise as the Northern soldiers and still loyal Southerners face off and come to a head when a young girl is savagely beaten.
Following a disastrous showdown on the streets of Claremont, Sam takes to the trail as a Bounty Hunter, tracking the worst criminals that the west has to offer. After he is nearly killed by a cattle thief, Sam decides to try his hand at buffalo hunting for the railroad.
Later, Sam returns to Texas and to the Rangers at the urging of his best friend…who just happens to be a professional outlaw!
About the Author
Christopher Cole grew up in the shadow of the mighty Sawtooth Mountain Range in central Idaho listening to the stories of mining camps, cowboys and mountain men. This close association with Western history and lore has inspired him to not only write about life in the Old West, but also live it out through reenactments and living history camps. Always a fan of western fiction, he strives to portray life in the late 1800’s as accurately as possible.
