About the Book

The Leadership Void concerns itself with "People Leadership" -- why its exercise has nearly vanished in most business and social endeavors.  The book offers insights on the barriers to leadership and how we can overcome those barriers.  Personal growth, preparation, dedication and respect are some of the key elements of leadership presented in this book.

Joe Alicea combines the experiences of many of his peers, with a few of his own, to support his position that "People Leadership" is absolutely essential at all levels of an organization.  He also speaks to the value of teamwork and guides you through some basic yet critical actions you, as a leader, must take to prepare yourself as you build a real team -- forming a cohesive group who share a single mindset, a unified purpose, and is pumped up to succeed.

Not all of the examples Joe presents are success stories.  Some are brutal, tragic stories that attest to what can happen if leadership fails.  Joe will tell you that leadership is one of the hardest things you´ll ever do but he´ll also show you how rewarding the practice of leadership can be.

About the Author

Joseph M. Alicea, a native of New York City, enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1972. Five years later, having earned a Bachelor of Science degree and completing Officer Training School, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Mr. Alicea's military assignments took him to the Western Pacific, the Aleutians Islands, Europe and several stateside bases. A few of those assignments were "unaccompanied;" meaning his family could not join him. Along the way, he earned an MBA and completed several DoD Professional Military Education programs. Throughout his Air Force career, Joe Alicea was assigned to the Air Training Command, Strategic Air Command, Air Force Logistics Command, Air Force Systems Command, North American Aerospace Defense Command, Air Force Space Command, United States Space Command and the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. The awards and decorations Joe Alicea wore on his uniform reflect the Nation's acknowledgement of his accomplishments through his sense of duty and professionalism. Duties that took him from B-52 maintenance to research and development, from Combat Crew duty to instructor of the Air Force's future leaders and then on to Mission Director of one of the most sophisticated Space and Ground systems in DoD. Joe was selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in 1992 but he declined the promotion and retired from the military in 1993. Today, he is a member of the Scitor Corporation and he continues to support DoD as a consultant on the development, integration and mission operations of multiple space-based systems.
