About the Book
This is a novel about Dr. Faustus. It is an updated version of the play written by Christopher Marlowe in the late 16th. century. The work is about a young college professor, Dr. John Faustus, who inherits a book of magic spells. The temptation of using the book causes him to struggle over whether or not to sell his soul to the devil; and the consequences that he could incur after the sale. There is a subplot of humor in the novel as his secretary and her boyfriend try to steal his book of spells. It ends with Faustus realizing he alone is responsible for his fate. He has the power to break the contract, and change, but will he? Although there is religion throughout the text, it is not a religious piece. It is more of a philosophical work. It´s focus is more on the decisions people make and how they are responsible for them. Faustus is given the opportunity to avoid going to hell, but to do so he must change. Is this his fate? Or free will?
