About the Book
Shortly before the end of World War II, seminarian Mario Bertolini has a brief affair with his best friend's fiancee. On the day of his ordination, he learns she is pregnant. He is prepared to leave the priesthood, but she will not hear of it. For more than twenty years, they keep their secret, and he watches another man raise his child. Mario continues to agonize over whether he should marry the woman he loves or remain a priest. A tragedy prompts him to re-evaluate his life.
