About the Author
Pieter Cornelis Smit (Peter) was born in 1935 in the Netherlands East Indies, now called Indonesia, where his father was a civil administrator for the Dutch colonial government. From 1942 to 1945 he was imprisoned by the Japanese when they occupied the country. In 1947 he went to the Netherlands to continue his education and in 1953 he joined the Royal Netherlands Navy. After a career spanning 33 years he retired in 1986. He applied for permanent residency in the USA which was granted in 1992. In 1998 he and his wife Johanna became American citizens and they now live in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, USA.
