About the Author
Walter Shirley Nicklin, Jr. was born in 1914 in the Old Town section of Alexandria, Virginia, where he worked in his father's pharmacy while attending college and medical school at The George Washington University. His older brother had fought in World War One and brought home a French wife, and one of Dr. Nicklin's fondest childhood memories was glimpsing Charles Lindbergh visiting Washington after his triumphal trans-Atlantic flight. But it was not until the young Dr. Nicklin was himself called to duty in World War Two, serving in Burma and China, did he experience life beyond his native Virginia. And this experience stayed very much with him after the war, even as he settled into the quotidian routine of life as a country doctor in what was then the small town of Warrenton, Virginia, 50 miles west of Washington. After a half-century of practicing medicine, his mind returned to those youthful days in the Far East -- now glimpsed in the words of this book he had always wanted to write.
