About the Book
Trained at the University of Chicago Press, Robert Erwin spent a number of years in scholarly publishing. Twice during that period he saved endangered presses from extinction. Twice he shaped manuscripts on which other publishers had given up into highly salable books. Among the jobs he held were Director of the University of Pennsylvania Press and Editor of Publications at the Harvard University Center for International Affairs. Since those years he has turned into an ace chutney-maker, dabbled in local politics, and written numerous essays in cultural history, a dozen of which were collected in The Great Language Panic (1990). He lives near some of his kith and kin in Amherst, Massachusetts.
