About the Book

Thirteen Bad Years is an attempt to look at the events immediately preceding the American Revolution as set forth by both the more popular historians from both sides of the Atlantic as well as first-person accounts. It is said that the winners write the history, but in the case of the American Revolution there is no shortage of material – often very conflicting material - dealing with both the events and the personalities. Thirteen Bad Years is an attempt to take a unified look at the actions of George III, parliament and colonists that led inevitably to the forcible separation that was the American Revolution.

About the Author

As a Boston Irishman, the author was raised with two basic biases. As a Bostonian, naturally everything the colonists did was reasoned and justifiable. As a descendant of Irish immigrants, it followed that everything the British did was mean-spirited and unjustifiable. A half-century as a newspaperman, however, ingrains the habit of reexamining preconceptions. It was this desire to take a second and more dispassionate look at both the events of 1763-1776 and their historic and political background that led to create of this volume. The author now makes his home in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
