About the Book

"My memoir begins when my brother was struck down by polio in the 1930´s in our little hometown in New Mexico. He was six and I was five. He was left nearly helpless. But this is not a sentimental tearjerker. It´s a story of a girl´s first two decades of growing up during the time of the Depression and World War II. It tells of the conflicts that arise among family members as they struggle to live normal lives in a situation that is not normal. The narrative centers on what became a never-ending conflict between my mother and me. She was determined that I devote my life to being my brother´s companion. I could not." - The Author.
