About the Book
Fire and Wind tells the story of a small Minnesota town at the turn of the century that is hit by two tragedies in the same year. Morristown is first hit by a fire in January of 1900 which burns a significant portion of the town. In September, the town is struck by a Tornado which spreads destruction throughout the town and causes the death of nine people. Fire and Wind is also a story of the lives of people from varying social and economic backgrounds at the turn of the century. The author shows you how the people of the town respond to the two tragedies and how the two tragedies affect their lives, their dreams and their futures. Fire and Wind is a fictional account of actual events and for the most part, actual people. Many of the facts about the events came from newspaper stories and while they told of the destruction, they don’t tell us about the people whose lives were lost. Fire and Wind tells the story of these people and the stories of those who loved them. Fire and Wind also gives us a glimpse of the impact of the industrial age on rural towns. We see people moving off the farm and working in factories. We see education becoming more important and the importance of new technologies such as electricity.
