Una pequeña niña, Tana, es el paradigma de la ignorada multitud de niños de los países en desarrollo, que se ven obligados a enfrentarse con un mundo nuevo donde por su color de piel diferente y desconocimiento de las costumbres de la ciudad son discriminados y a menudo explotados. Desde su arribo, el calor humano de la familia que la acoge, especialmente las cuatro niñas, la ayuda a superar el trauma producido por la separación de su familia y, aunque nunca logra compenetrarse totalmente, su inteligencia y esfuerzo le ganan un lugar entre la gazmoña sociedad limeña de los años 30.

About the Author

Martha Calvo was born in Lima, Perú. At the age of six, due to the demands of her father’s job, the family moved to the city of Iquitos —in the Amazon jungle— where, suddenly, she found herself literally transported to the days of the wagon. That “novelty” prompted Martha to write endless letters to her cousins, describing in minute detail the immensity of the Amazon River, her house located half a block away, the red earth of unpaved roads, unknown animals and plants, painted native faces, never seen before lightning, thunder and showers, strangers in Lima where it does not rain, carts pulled by oxen, kerosene lamps, the water seller and his donkey; all fodder for her fertile imagination that later began producing tales, short stories and four novels: "Ciudad Madre", "El Parque de los Sueños," "Abismos" and "El Regalo". Music and painting also form an important part of her life; the covers of her last three novels are examples of her creativity. She currently resides in Vancouver, Canada with her family.
